What Does It Mean To Be Born Again?
Rev. Bessie Coleman, Ph.D.
To be born physically means that a new creature comes by way of physical
methods--through his mother's womb. To be born again means that a new
creature comes by way of spiritual methods.
John 3:6 says... that which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is
born of the Spirit is spirit.
To be born physically, (or by way of a woman's womb) one becomes a child of
their biological parents and other times adoptive parents; however, when one
is born spiritually, he becomes a child of the Living God. This birth is called being "born again".
Romans 8:10, 14 says... and if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of
sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. For as many as are
led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons on God.
When a child experiences a physical birth, they go through life with many
changes. Their height and weight change with age. Their hair may change
colors with age. Skin textures may change with age.
When a re-birth takes place, there are many changes. These changes are
spiritual. Behaviors may change. Attitudes may change. One's conversation
II Cor. 5:17 says... If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old
things passed away. Behold all things are new.
Salvation in itself is instantaneous; however living holy is a process.
Through accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we began to live a new
life, an eternal life. Suddenly, all of our sins are forgiven. We
experience "true peace" a type of peace that comes with only having God in
our life. We set new goals and develop new attitudes.
Our focus is turned to things of eternal value, rather than things of
temporary value. Our focus is turned away from the physical realm towards
the spiritual realm.
1 Peter 1:23 says... For you have been born again, not of perishable seed,
but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
Just as this was complicated for Nicodemus to understand, this can be
difficult for many of us at particular times in our lives; however, we must
understand that this is based upon a leap of faith.
Hebrew's 11:1 says... Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the
evidence of things not seen.
The Bible further states in 11:6... For it is impossible to please God
We must begin by believing John 3:16... For God so loved the world, that he
gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not
perish, but have everlasting life.
Them who hath the Son hath life. Them who hath not the Son is damned.
We must believe.
